A healthy mind needs a healthy body - Health and Hygiene Program 2012

Although CFI's prime area of work is in the field of education and children’s development, we try to see the bigger picture. A healthy mind needs a healthy body. Therefore, one of our core programs is about Health & Hygiene.

In slum areas, health is one of the burning issues, as families mostly don't have the money to cover medical expenses and are not aware about insurance policies and other support facilities. Therefore preventing  diseases by improving hygienic conditions in the communities continues to play an important role in our program.

One of the major problems in slum areas is the limited space. Very often five and more people live together in one room. Toilets and sanitary facilities are sometimes outside the house and shared by many people. Also, there are many children moving around in the community all day. Due to those living conditions, diseases spread very fast and maintaining good hygiene becomes even more important. Our programs try to reinforce good habits like brushing your teeth and especially washing your hands regularly.

We don't only focus on the children though, but we start with the mothers, who can act as a role model later on. They are usually the ones who take care of the house and prepare the food and are in turn particularly responsible for hygienic conditions. The children will follow their mother's example and take up certain habits. In women's meetings, the mothers learn about health and how it is related to nutrition, mental health and hygiene.

In the workshops conducted last month, Mr.Raj Azim Inamdar spoke to the women about the male and female body structure. Knowing your own body helps in taking proper care of it. We are very lucky that Mr. Inamdar, an expert in the field of Health and Hygiene, agreed to conduct those workshops in several communities in Pune. The pictures were taken in Shastrinagar, where we had a four-days program about Health and Hygiene in September 2012. To spice up the lecture, Mr. Inamdar  used songs and drawings and turned it into a very interactive session, where all participants enjoyed and learnt a lot at the same time. See for yourself:

Mr. Inamdar performed songs about hygiene, and the women sang along.

All women participated actively...

...also while drawing their own chart of the female body

The women learnt about their own body structure.
